Bulgakov's backstage novel became an immersive descent into a theater's madness. A Dead Man's Diary moved from a 60-seat studio to Emerson's Paramount Center and won Arlekin its first Elliot Norton Award.

Mikhail Bulgakov's unfinished Theatrical Novel is a satire of the Moscow Art Theatre written by a man it nearly destroyed. Igor Golyak's adaptation turned it into an immersive production about a playwright swallowed by the institution that promised to stage him. David Gamarnik, Darya Denisova, Viktoria Kovalenko, Eduard Snitkovsky, Irina Bordian and Alexander Petetsky performed.

It opened in the Needham studio in May 2017: 15 performances, about 750 people, in a room that seats 60. It returned in September 2017 and February 2018. In March 2018 Arlekin played the Jackie Liebergott Black Box at the Emerson Paramount Center, the company's first appearance at ArtsEmerson.

The production won the 2018 Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Design and earned Golyak a nomination for Outstanding Director. The studio brought it back through the fall of 2018.
