Artistic Director’s Welcome

Igor Golyak Artistic Director

I am extremely excited to welcome the company and the community to Arlekin’s Zero Gravity Lab in its inaugural season!  As I look back at where we started, I realize how unbelievably fortunate we are to be together as a company, in this ensemble, to exist in the same time and space, and be so lucky enough to make art and share it with our audience.

Looking ahead to where the company aspires to go, we are clear in our desire to maintain our roots in the Russian approach to theatre, while opening that affects today’s audiences through reimagining and recreating “the theater.”  A testament to our collective impact is the feedback I received from a patron and supporter with her emotions about our last production of The Stone…”there were too many. I hated it and loved it. I was mauled and then put together. We had an argument at work about it. We constantly have heated discussions about each and every show you produce. I will continue to support the work you do.”

To me this is the meaning and the essence of our responsibility. We aim to remain relevant, challenge the establishment artistically while rediscovering meaning, and trying to understand who we are as a community in this time and place today.  As the great Peter Brook said: “Shakespeare doesn’t belong to the past. If his material is valid, it is valid now. It’s like coal. The only meaningfulness of a piece of coal starts and finishes with its combustion, giving us light and heat. And that to me is Shakespeare.”

The dream, hope and our desire is to keep producing heat for another decade.

I am truly grateful and humbled by the support and generosity of all those who have been dedicated to our success. I thank you and look forward to celebrating many more milestones together.
