In 1939 the MS St. Louis carried Jewish refugees away from Germany and was turned back. WITNESS asked what the world saw then, and what it sees now. It was seen in more than 55 countries.
WITNESS was virtual, interactive documentary theater about the voyage of the MS St. Louis and the longer history of antisemitism that surrounds it. Nana Grinstein wrote the script with Igor Golyak, developed with scholars at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Darya Denisova performed. Igor Golyak directed.
It streamed from December 10, 2021 to January 23, 2022 and reached audiences in more than 55 countries, co-presented by the Vilna Shul, JArts, Action for Post-Soviet Jewry, Jookender, Akiva in Cleveland, Mishkan in Chicago, JewishBoston.com, Gesher Theatre in Tel Aviv and the Shalva Center in Jerusalem. The Boston Globe and WBUR covered it.
It won a TWI-NY Pandemic Award for Best Immersive Historical Drama and shared the 2022 Elliot Norton Special Citation.
